Cricut Maker – Smart Cutting Machine | Joann
Our Cricut Maker is the ultimate smart cutting machine for sewers, quilters, and crafters who demand versatility. With adaptive tool system technology, the Maker automatically adjusts blade depth and cutting pressure for each material—from delicate tissue paper to thick leather and balsa wood.
We designed the Maker with 10X more cutting force than our Explore machines, so you can tackle hundreds of materials with confidence. The expanded workspace handles fabric cuts up to 12 inches wide and 24 feet long when you use the rotary blade with your cutting mat. Pair it with Design Space software on your computer, tablet, or phone to access thousands of ready-to-make projects and upload your own designs.
What makes the Maker special

Adaptive Tool System & Cutting Power
The Joann Cricut Maker features an adaptive tool system that reads each blade or tool you attach and automatically calibrates pressure and speed. When you load the rotary blade for fabric, the machine adjusts to glide smoothly without snagging delicate fibers. Switch to the knife blade for thicker materials like 2.4mm chipboard or leather, and the Maker increases force to cut clean edges in a single pass.
We’ve measured 10 times more cutting force compared to Explore machines, which translates to effortless cuts through balsa wood, craft foam, and thick cardstock. The housing holds up to six tool types simultaneously—store your scoring stylus, pens, and blades in the built-in compartments so you can switch mid-project without hunting through drawers.

Fabric Cutting & Rotary Blade Technology
Precision Fabric Cuts
Our rotary blade replicates the action of a hand-held rotary cutter, rolling through cotton, fleece, and felt without dragging or bunching. You’ll cut quilt pieces, appliqués, and garment panels with consistent accuracy down to 0.1mm. The blade never touches your cutting mat surface—it glides between the mat and your fabric layer, which means your mats last longer and fabric edges stay smooth.
Load fabric pieces up to 12 inches wide and use the extended cutting mat to work with lengths up to 24 feet. We recommend prewashing quilting cotton and using a FabricGrip mat for best results. The Maker holds registration marks throughout long cuts, so pattern alignment stays true even when you’re cutting border strips or continuous bias binding.
Materials & Compatibility
We’ve tested the Cricut Maker with more than 300 materials across paper, vinyl, iron-on, fabric, and specialty media. Everyday cuts include cardstock, adhesive vinyl, heat transfer vinyl, poster board, and vellum. The Maker handles these materials in Fast Mode, which doubles your cutting speed for high-volume projects like party decorations or small business orders.
Specialty materials require the knife blade or deep-point blade: tooling leather up to 3mm thick, 2.4mm chipboard, 3mm craft foam, cork board, and balsa wood up to 3/32 inch. You’ll also cut decorative materials like metallic poster board, glitter cardstock, sticker paper, magnetic sheets, and window cling. Each material setting in Design Space corresponds to a recommended blade and pressure combination, so you get clean cuts on the first try without test strips.

Cricut Maker Questions
The Maker cuts thicker and denser materials thanks to its adaptive tool system and increased cutting force. You can cut balsa wood up to 3/32 inch thick, tooling leather up to 3mm, 2.4mm chipboard, basswood, and craft foam using the knife blade. The rotary blade cuts fabric without a backing, which isn’t possible on Explore machines. The Maker also handles heavier cardstock and matboard that would jam or tear on lower-force models.
No, you can operate the Cricut Maker entirely from a smartphone or tablet using the free Design Space app for iOS or Android. The machine connects via Bluetooth to your mobile device, and you access the full project library, upload images, and send cuts wirelessly. A computer offers a larger workspace for detailed editing, but it’s completely optional. You’ll need an internet connection during project setup to sync your designs, but cutting happens offline once a project is loaded.
Fine-Point Blades typically last 25-30 full sheets of cardstock or vinyl before requiring replacement—longer if you primarily cut paper. Rotary blades for fabric last through 300-500 cuts depending on material thickness and whether you prewash fabrics. The knife blade is the most durable and can cut 100+ pieces of balsa wood or leather before dulling.
You’ll know it’s time to replace a blade when you see ragged edges, incomplete cuts, or the machine makes multiple passes over the same line. Clean blades after every few projects to extend their lifespan, and store them in protective caps between uses.
No, fabric always requires a cutting mat even when using the rotary blade. The mat stabilizes the fabric during cutting and provides a grippy surface that prevents shifting. We recommend the FabricGrip mat for cotton, fleece, and felt—it has stronger adhesive than standard mats to hold textiles securely.
For best results, prewash and iron fabric before cutting, then press it firmly onto the mat to eliminate air bubbles. The rotary blade rolls between the mat surface and fabric, cutting cleanly without damaging your mat.

Many crafters use the free version of Design Space successfully by uploading their own SVG files or purchasing individual images.
The original Cricut Maker uses Bluetooth and USB connectivity, while the Maker 3 adds Smart Materials compatibility for matless cutting on rolls of vinyl, cardstock, and iron-on up to 12 feet long. The Maker 3 also cuts 2X faster than the original Maker in Fast Mode.
Both machines feature the same adaptive tool system, 10X cutting force, and compatibility with all Cricut blades and tools. If you primarily work with fabric or standard-size sheets on mats, the original Maker delivers the same precision at a lower price. Choose the Maker 3 if you need matless cutting for long vinyl decals or high-volume production runs.
Yes, the Cricut Maker is compatible with all Cricut cutting mats (12×12 and 12×24 sizes) and legacy tools from Explore and Maker machines. Your existing Fine-Point Blades, Deep-Point Blades, scoring stylus, and pens work in the Maker’s accessory bays. The rotary blade, knife blade, and perforation blade are exclusive to Maker machines and won’t fit in Explore models, but all Explore tools work in the Maker for backward compatibility.
