What makes our cotton fabric special

Fabric Weights & Best Uses
Understanding cotton fabric weight helps you choose the right material for your project. Quilting cotton typically weighs 4-5 oz per square yard, offering a medium body that pieces and quilts beautifully without excessive bulk in seam allowances.
Lightweight cotton lawn and voile weigh 2-3 oz per square yard, making them ideal for garments that need drape and breathability. Heavyweight cotton canvas at 10-12 oz per square yard provides the structure needed for bags, upholstery, and items that carry weight or endure frequent use.

Pre-Washing & Care Instructions
We recommend pre-washing all cotton fabric before cutting to remove sizing and allow for shrinkage. Machine wash in warm water with a mild detergent, then tumble dry on medium heat or line dry to minimize wrinkles.
Most of our cotton fabrics shrink 2-4% in length and width during the first wash, so plan your yardage accordingly. Once pre-washed, press with a hot iron while fabric is slightly damp to restore a smooth surface for accurate cutting and piecing.
Cutting & Sewing Tips
Cotton fabric cuts cleanly with sharp fabric shears or a rotary cutter paired with a self-healing mat and quilting ruler. For quilting cotton, we recommend washing, drying, and pressing before cutting to ensure your finished quilt blocks measure accurately.
Use a universal 80/12 or 90/14 needle for quilting-weight cotton, and switch to a ballpoint or stretch needle for cotton jersey knit. A standard stitch length of 2.5mm works well for most cotton fabrics, though you may want to shorten to 2.0mm for lightweight cotton lawn to prevent puckering.

Cotton Fabric Questions
Quilting cotton is a medium-weight fabric (4-5 oz per square yard) with a tighter weave optimized for piecing, pressing, and maintaining shape through multiple seam allowances. It typically measures 44-45 inches wide.
Apparel cotton like cotton lawn or voile is lighter weight (2-3 oz per square yard) with a softer drape designed for garments that move with your body. These fabrics are often wider (54-60 inches) to accommodate pattern layouts for clothing. Both are 100% cotton, but the weave structure and weight serve different project needs.
Most cotton fabric shrinks 2-4% in both length and width during the first wash and dry cycle. We recommend pre-washing all cotton fabric in warm water and tumble drying on medium heat before cutting your project.
After the initial shrinkage, properly pre-washed cotton remains stable through future launderings. Always add 10% extra yardage to your project requirements to account for pre-washing shrinkage and cutting adjustments.
Cotton canvas and heavyweight cotton work well for outdoor cushions, tote bags, and items that receive occasional outdoor use, but 100% cotton is not inherently weather-resistant. For extended outdoor exposure, consider treating your finished cotton project with a fabric waterproofing spray.
Alternatively, look for cotton-polyester blends or outdoor fabric specifically treated for UV and moisture resistance. Indoor-outdoor projects like porch pillows that come inside during rain benefit from cotton’s breathability while avoiding prolonged weather exposure.
Use a universal 80/12 needle for lightweight cotton lawn and voile, a 90/14 needle for quilting-weight cotton, and a 100/16 needle for heavyweight cotton canvas. All-purpose polyester or cotton-wrapped polyester thread in 50-weight works well for most cotton sewing.
For cotton jersey knit, switch to a ballpoint or stretch needle to prevent skipped stitches, and consider using woolly nylon or stretch thread for seams that need to stretch with the fabric. Replace your needle after every 8-10 hours of sewing to maintain stitch quality.
Cotton fabric naturally frays because it’s a woven material, but you can minimize fraying by finishing seam allowances with a zigzag stitch, serger, or pinking shears immediately after cutting. For quilting projects, a standard ¼-inch seam allowance secured with backstitching at the start and end of each seam prevents fraying.
Pre-washing cotton fabric before cutting also reduces the loose threads that appear along raw edges. If you’re storing cut fabric pieces before sewing, pink the edges or apply a thin line of fray check solution to areas that will receive heavy handling.
Yes, our 100% cotton quilting fabric is a safe, breathable choice for baby quilts, blankets, and nursery items. Cotton is naturally hypoallergenic and softens with each wash, making it gentle against a baby’s sensitive skin.
We recommend pre-washing baby quilt fabric to remove any manufacturing residue and eliminate shrinkage before construction. Avoid fabrics with small buttons, beads, or embellishments that could pose choking hazards, and choose quilting cotton with non-toxic, colorfast dyes that withstand repeated washing.
Yes, we offer fabric swatches for most cotton prints and solids so you can evaluate color, weight, and hand before committing to yardage. Swatches typically measure 4×4 inches and help you coordinate prints or match colors to existing projects.
Order swatches online or request them in-store at the cutting counter. Seeing fabric in your home’s lighting conditions often reveals undertones and textures that don’t translate in online photos, making swatches a valuable tool for confident fabric selection.
