Materials & construction

Materials & Construction
We craft our Joann baskets from materials chosen for durability, aesthetics, and versatility across different storage needs. Seagrass baskets feature hand-woven natural fibers harvested from sustainable sources, offering a textured organic look that pairs beautifully with home décor in farmhouse and coastal styles. Each seagrass strand is individually woven around a reinforced frame to create a sturdy structure that resists sagging even when filled to capacity.
Wire baskets combine powder-coated steel frames with soft fabric liners, balancing industrial strength with gentle fabric protection. The steel wire undergoes a multi-stage coating process that resists rust, scratches, and daily wear. Cotton and polyester liners are pre-shrunk and colorfast, maintaining their appearance through repeated washing cycles.

Sizing & Capacity Guide
Choosing the Right Basket Size
Our baskets range from compact 8-inch cubes perfect for desk organization to large 12-inch seagrass baskets that hold full-size throws and bulk craft supplies. Small rope coil baskets (8″Ø × 5″H) work well for jewelry, sewing notions, and bathroom essentials. Medium wire baskets (10″ L × 8″ W × 6″ H) accommodate folded towels, magazines, and standard yarn skeins.
Large seagrass baskets (12″ L × 10″ W × 8″ H) provide enough interior volume for blankets, pillows, and fabric bolts up to one yard. Collapsible fabric cubes in the standard 11-inch size fit most cube shelving systems and hold approximately 1.5 cubic feet of contents. For maximum capacity, our rope coil large basket (12″Ø × 8″H) supports up to 20 pounds while maintaining its shape.
Care & Maintenance
Proper care extends the life of your Joann baskets and keeps them looking fresh through years of daily use. Seagrass baskets require minimal maintenance—simply wipe down with a damp cloth to remove dust and debris, then air dry completely before refilling. Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause natural fibers to fade and become brittle over time.
Wire baskets can be cleaned with a soft brush or cloth and mild all-purpose cleaner. Remove fabric liners before cleaning the wire frame. Most liners are machine washable on a gentle cycle with cold water; tumble dry on low heat or line dry to prevent shrinkage. Iron liners on a medium setting if needed, avoiding any printed or embellished areas.

Questions About Our Baskets
Our wire baskets with fabric liners and collapsible fabric cubes work well in bathrooms when properly ventilated. The powder-coated wire resists rust and moisture, while the liners dry quickly between uses. Seagrass and rope coil baskets can be used in bathrooms but should not be exposed to standing water or constant high humidity, which can weaken natural fibers over time.
For best results in humid spaces, ensure adequate air circulation and wipe baskets dry if they become damp. Avoid placing seagrass or rope baskets directly on wet surfaces or near shower spray.
Standard yarn skeins fit comfortably in our medium wire basket (10" L × 8" W × 6" H) or medium rope coil basket (10"Ø × 6"H). Each basket holds approximately 8-10 standard worsted weight skeins or 5-6 larger bulky weight skeins. The wire basket allows you to see your yarn collection at a glance, while the rope coil basket protects fibers from sunlight and dust.
For larger yarn stashes, our large seagrass basket (12" L × 10" W × 8" H) accommodates up to 15 worsted weight skeins. The soft interior of rope baskets prevents snagging on delicate fibers like mohair and alpaca.
Yes, we offer replacement liners for all our wire basket sizes in the same eight colors as the original baskets. Replacement liners are sold individually and fit securely into the wire frame without modification. You can order additional liners to rotate colors seasonally or keep extras on hand while washing.
Replacement cardboard inserts for collapsible fabric cubes are also available if the originals become worn or damaged over time.
Our seagrass basket handles are reinforced with wrapped rope and secured at multiple attachment points to support up to 15 pounds when carried. The handles themselves are rated for 20 pounds, but we recommend keeping the total basket weight at or below 15 pounds to prevent strain on the woven body.
For maximum durability, distribute weight evenly and avoid carrying the basket by a single handle. When stored on shelves, seagrass baskets can hold up to 20 pounds as the weight rests on the base rather than the handles.
Our 11-inch collapsible fabric cubes are designed to fit most standard cube shelving systems, including Kallax, Better Homes & Gardens, and ClosetMaid units. The cubes measure 11" L × 11" W × 11" H externally, with a slight compression tolerance that allows them to slide smoothly into 13-inch openings.
For best fit, measure your shelving interior before ordering. If your shelving has 12-inch openings, the cubes will fit with minimal clearance. For 14-inch or larger openings, consider using multiple smaller baskets or selecting our 13-inch cube size.
Our baskets are designed for indoor use and should not be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. Prolonged exposure to rain, direct sunlight, and temperature extremes will damage natural fibers and fade fabric colors. Wire baskets may rust if the powder coating becomes compromised by outdoor elements.
For covered porch or sunroom use where baskets remain protected from direct weather, seagrass and wire baskets can be used short-term. Bring baskets indoors during storms and avoid leaving them outside overnight when dew and moisture are present.
Some minimal fiber shedding is normal during the first few weeks as loose strands settle. To minimize shedding, gently brush the basket exterior with a soft-bristle brush before first use to remove any loose fibers from the weaving process. Avoid overfilling the basket, which can strain the weave and cause additional shedding.
Keep seagrass baskets away from sharp objects that could snag and pull fibers. If you notice a specific strand coming loose, trim it close to the basket surface with scissors rather than pulling, which can unravel the weave.
